THE WESTS AWAKE

Every weekend somewhere in the country people are out riding their bikes. When the Enduro and MotoX seasons close the winter Rallye crew don the gear and fair or foul weather head off North , South , East or West to the start location for two days covering road , track , trail and sand. Sometimes to ‘ win’ a turkey and more often to raise a few bob for those in more need than us.

Last weekend , as is traditional the venue start was Kilfenora , set deep in North West Clare an area made famous by the limestone outcrops that form the Burren ( and quite a beautiful place that is ) but more recently by the “Father Ted” programmes filmed just around the corner . The locals are mighty proud of their limestone but “Father Ted” just might cap that! Most will have seen “Father Ted”, perhaps not so many the Burren . Take a trip. Unnaturally for the time of year , this years event expertly and brilliantly put together by Daithi Wright and Jochen was dry ( ish) and warm , do the hardy souls had an easy ride , well in terms of weather but a long days riding covering N. Clare and S. Galway , more than 50 % off road on great tracks , made slippery when wet . Care was needed not to end up in a heap as the underlying rock is difficult to see but always there, round and slippy a bike riders dream.

Once again, the boys and girls had to find the elusive little discs, 28 in all each bearing a bike related note to be taken down as evidence. They were laid out in no particular order (a very good system) but left to the riders to decide the most optimum way to get them all. No one did, partly because one had been removed by the forest harvester and the rest were simply out of reach time with a deadline of 530 to check in. Starting at 10 and finishing at 5.30, 7 full hours riding was still not enough to find and collect them all. Cute these organisers. In the event Brian MC Girr, Dr. Paul, Louis and Nic C all achieved the most, the recipients of the prizes. They collected 19 of total. Not a competitive event of course but try telling Brian MC Girr that , rushing off at 5.23 to try for one more but had to turn back to make the CP on time.
