Kilworth 2009 Race report

Kilworth Enduro

The DFMA (Defence Forces Motorcycle Association) ran the 4th round of the Irish Enduro Championship on the 13th of September near it’s training area in Kilworth, Co. Cork and what a Corker of an event it was (sorry!).

Clerk of Course Phil Gunn and his team had superbly prepared a course for an Enduro that hadn’t been run for a few years and the 60 riders were greeted with sunny skys and perfect Enduro conditions.

The Expert class led the riders away at 11.01 and had to tackle 5 laps with gradually decreasing check times and 4 special tests. The riders were told at the briefing that their first lap would be a sighting lap for the test due to it’s fast layout and they weren’t wrong, as the test pace proved to be as hot as the weather.
Starting on a forest track just before a small stream crossing the test then followed a smooth, fast single track path alongside a river, it then took the riders rocketing through a maze of mega fast man-made fire breaks and forestry roads that were taken at very high speeds and felt like you were playing an Enduro video game at times! A steep downhill single track through dense forest then led to a twisting muddy riverside path at the end of the test and emerged back into the glorious sunshine.

Considerable work had been done to the course and it was worth every minute of it, as the vast majority of the riders finished the day with smiles on their (sweaty) faces and all agreed that it was a great days racing on a fast and flowing course that tested all ability levels.

Thanks to Phil and his team.

RESULTS TO FOLLOW SHORTLY

Next round is on the 20th of September at Clonaslee near Port Laoise, see you there.
