All Systems Go For This Weekend’s Sprint Enduro at Doon
Preparations are well under way as the Fastlane MCC ready themselves for the first round of their Summer Series this coming weekend June 19th at their motocross circuit at Doon, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. In what will mark the first event of its kind in Ireland, the Sprint Enduro race promises excitement and close racing to entertain competitors and spectators alike. Following the format of the highly successful British Sprint Enduro Championship, the “sprint racing” format will see riders complete a series of separately timed loops that will incorporate both the freshly upgraded motocross track and surrounding woodland along with numerous hi-speed grass track sections.
In a “nut shell” it is a very easy format to understand. It differs from a traditional time-card enduro in that the trail section of the event is removed. Gone is the need for timecards, fuel and service checks, tyre regulations or the need for working lights. Since everything happens around a central point simply arrive and ride! All competitors will ride one special test approximately eight times during the day. Riders simply go from the paddock to a holding zone and from there head to the start area before completing a lap. Riders set off at 30-second intervals. Once a test is completed it’s back to the pit area. When the last rider finishes a lap the first starts the next. Riders will have about 30 minutes to ready themselves between laps, so there’s certainly no hanging around! And when the test will be approximately 10 minutes long it promises considerably more track time than your normal motocross race day!
Nick Craigie: “Sprint Enduro is a relativity new format but one that has been very well received in Britain. Having attended the BSEC I’ve seen how exciting the racing can be at these events. This type of racing perfectly mixes both the world of motocross and enduro and the proof of that is having top motocross riders like Carl Nunn, Tom Church and Jamie Lewis competing in the British championship. I feel our venue at Doon will lend itself perfectly to Sunday’s race by mixing both the motocross track with short sections of woodland linked together by grass track sections. It will provide some very exciting racing for both riders and spectators alike.”
