Top Irish motocross rider and 2011 Ulster motocross champion, Richard Bird clocks up the miles with family and friends on their annual sponsored cycle…
Every February Richard and his family organise a fundraiser for the season ahead. They like to think of it as more of a get together with family, friends and sponsors more than anything. So it kills two birds with one stone (excuse the pun), writes Sorcha Laverty.
So this year it was decided that a sponsored 25 mile cycle from Lisburn to Newcastle was the way to go. A few non cyclists to include, Richard’s dad, Aide and friends geared up for the challenge along with a few other (more advanced) cyclists including sponsor Ricky Watt, Gary Addis, Richard himself, his other half Sorcha Laverty and his brother in law Mark. The more advanced decided that it was only fair that they cycle there and back again to make it a bit more of a challenge.
Thankfully everyone made it safely and successfully to Newcastle. They didn’t stop for an ice cream but for a photo opportunity taken by none other than Mr George Porter from the racing who just happened to be walking down the promenade in Newcastle with his lovely wife when Richard and the gang arrived. The road home to Lisburn required a bit more of an effort as they turned back into a head wind but they continued on nonetheless and made it safely home.
Later that night, friends, family and sponsors met for “the get together”. They munched out on a hog roast, raffled various prizes that were kindly donated and danced the night away, to a great band I may add. It was a huge turn out and Richard’s most successful fundraiser to date.
A total of £1400 was raised that night and from the sponsored cycle. Richard was so grateful to everyone who helped out, sponsored the cyclists and supported his fundraising night.
Richard is now looking forward to the season ahead along with sponsors Norman Watt Motorcycles, Rowly & Ricky Suitor and Adrian Lappin. His aim is to make these sponsors proud because without their help and support the race season would not be the same.
This year Richard is looking forward to defending his Ulster MX1 title and competing in the Irish and Southern Centre Championships. He also hopes to do a few British Championship rounds if at all possible.
Richard would also like thank all those who support him at the racing and help make the race days enjoyable for him! After all…that’s what it’s all about!
