Team VMX had their 2 mx1 riders racing in round 6 of the Retink Racing Irish Championship in Birdhill Co Tipperary. A wet week leading up to race day had the track in a very wet state but dried up quickly.
Mahon went very well in qualifying even though he didn’t feel like he got a clean lap but still posted 2nd fastest lap and only missed top spot by .1 of a second from Wayne Garrett.
Race 1 and a good start saw him rounding the 1st corner in 2nd place behind Gary Gibson. A slick move up the inside on corner 2 got him the lead he so desperately wanted. Gibson kept him honest for most of the race until about 3 laps to go when Mahon started to pull away and stretch it to 13 seconds at the chequered flag.
Race 2 was a carbon copy start but didn’t make the same pass stick and further on in the race Wayne Garrett passed him for 2nd and Mahon settled in, in 3rd to the finish.
Race 2 saw him 2nd on corner 1 and that was where he was to stay.
