This weekend will see what is regarded by some, as one of the most anticipated events on the Irish Motocross calendar, the Carrickfergus Club’s Two Day Motocross at Desertmartin. Competitors from throughout the UK and Ireland will make the trip to the spectacular, former grand prix circuit for the event which runs over Friday 24th and Saturday 25th August.
The weekends on track entertainment will be provided by upwards of 150 competitors all battling for glory in their respective classes. The LJ’s Diner Semi Expert class could be the most tightly contested with a number of front runners entered including Jordan McClelland, Darren Grills and Jordan Martin all aiming to reach that top step.
G-Force Suspension is associated with the event for the first time as the Premier class sponsor where one of their riders Gavin Robertson from Edinburgh will be competiting. Robertson currently lies fifth in the Scottish Championship so the local guys will have their work cut out for sure. With the absence of the recognised Ulster Championship main men, this class is wide open for the younger riders to show their pedigree. Drew Goudy and Michael McCammond look set to renew their 2011 U21 Championship rivalry at the front of this one.
If those races aren’t enough to whet your appetite then the Ophir Motors / Watt Motorcycles backed Clubmen and the Mcat Racing Quads will be providing more two and four wheeled action before the No Fear / Cash for Kids Handicap Race concludes the weekend’s racing.
The event has recently partnered with the Cool FM/Cash for Kids Charity and a number of things have been organised to raise funds. £5 will be donated from every competitor’s entry fee along with funds raised from a raffle and a ‘Strongman’ contest held before the live band ‘Strictly No Ballroom’ gets the party underway in the marquee on Friday evening.
The Friday night entertainment in the marquee and a programme that sees 25 races packed into an exciting two days of racing should content even the keenest of motorsport fans and with an adult two day admission priced at just £5.00, it is an event not to be missed. Free parking and a camping pitch is included within this price for anyone wishing to travel up and stay overnight. Also to encourage families to come along for the two days the club have decided to give free admission to any children under 16 that are accompanied by an adult making it an affordable family weekend out.
For those thinking of making the trip the bikes will be on track from 9.30am both days with racing commencing at approx. 11am, running until around 5pm. The Desertmartin Circuit will be signposted from the Magherafelt Town Centre and is about a 5 minute drive away. More information on this event is available on the Carrickfergus Club Website www.carrickfergusmcc.co.uk or you can check out the club on Facebook and Twitter.
