VMX KTM’s Michael Mahon secures second overall in the 2012 Retink Adult Irish Motocross Championship with a thrilling final race victory…
The Retink Racing Adult Irish Championship reached its finale on Sunday last in Wexford’s Off Road track in Clonroche Co Wexford.
VMX’s Michael Mahon went into Sunday’s round in 2nd place in the mx1 championship behind Suzuki mounted Gary Gibson. Michael was trailing Gary by 42 points and had an arduous task ahead of him, if not an impossible one.
The day got off to a good start for Mahon on his KTM 450, with him familiarising himself with the new track layout very quickly and despite the track been very slippy from the morning’s rain, he topped the list for qualifying.
Race 1, He got a great jump out of the gate getting him the holeshot and leading the first lap. After lap 2 Gary Gibson was putting him under pressure for the lead and he made a pass on him, Michael tried to follow his lines but he had no answer for him and had to settle for 2nd.
Race2, This was a carbon copy of race one with Michael getting the holeshot again but he only held the lead for a couple of laps. Again he had to settle for 2nd place.
Race3, Yet another holeshot and he made sure he wasn’t giving Gibson the last win of the year and after 4 or 5 solid hard laps of pressure Mahon pulled a comfortable gap to win the race.

“Today was a good day for me, the track was pretty slippy with the rain that we got in the morning time so I was happy to have stayed on two wheels all day, I had 3 great starts and 3 good races with Gary so it was a nice way to end the year and to get the final race win made it a little bit better. Well done to the club for all their hard work on the track.
The changes made the track a lot safer and very enjoyable.
I would also like to congratulate Gary on his championship win and promise to give him an even better run for it next year.
