The Merzouga Rallye – Stage 3 Full Day Report

Not sure who did the most travelling today … Vincent and Brian or the assistance crew who were up and down the road since early. Nearly 400 km.
Last evening Brian was 29th with Vincent 31st. At time of writing we are awaiting today’s results but Brian should have moved up a few places running well all day and hitting every way point. Good job.
Vincent also hit every navigation point but got lost a few times having to backtrack costing time.
It is always a decision whether to go forward or back after missing a way point. The penalty is 1 hour and it could take you 10 minutes or 2 hours to go back. Decisions in the heat of day.
There is also a big penalty for speeding in the designated zones. Gone are the days of hammering through villages or sliding into a check point. The speed zones are marked on the road book and on the GPS. More than 10 infringements over 10 km and it’s exclusion and on your. Today, Brian:
”a Jesus I am f****d but I could cry. Just lost all energy and can navigate faster than I can ride …. Are we finished ? ( yes)  thank Christ for that.”
Vincent:
”Very tired now but happy to finish . I went the wrong side of a mountain and spent a long time trying to find my way. Only for a German rider I may have been lost for longer. Great though.”

You can see what Vincent has to say here :

Good day.

Pal Ullevaalseter – now 1st overall.

Pal Ullevaalseter: “It was a beautiful stage, 200 km behind Laia! Congratulations for her riding style and navigation”.

Laia Sanz the world lady Enduro champion won today special.

Laia Sanz: “It was good fun to start all together as in a manche of motocross. I took the lead and opened the track for the 240 km of today’s special stage. It was a beautiful stage, lots of sand and a difficult navigation. I knew that Pal and Johnny were behind me but they never passed me. I’m happy of this result. Yesterday I was fast but broke the roadbook holder so today was really good”.
