It’s the time of year when the ‘oldies’ dust themselves off , dust off the bikes and head off to far flung places for the annual Mothball Rallye . It may be seen by many as a sort of junket on bikes but it is far from it . Three days riding , 250 km per Day over very small and often non existent roads . They are long days but given the weather last weekend great days . Beautiful weather , great scenery and some sublime off road tracks make it enjoyable .
The average age this year was considerably reduced by the addition of a number of young guns
Mick O , Leighton , Ivan and Steve . They seemed surprised by how good it was …… Wait till it rains guys ,! And you can see one buried the good old cagiva good and proper ….. an easy run ?
As every mothball the route taken is not generally known , not because of any reason other than to preserve the ‘ going’ the organisers cannot have dozens of bikes covering the ground . A lot of effort goes into finding and logging the route and that can be anywhere in the country Cork to Donegal . Quite how they find some of the roads and tracks is a mystery but it appears the country is crisscrosses with by roads and tracks some of which remained unused for many years . The ”mothballers” keep them open and open them up only to close again immediately afterwards . Back of farmyards , houses Around fields and over hidden fords ; it is all there and great for it .
Well done to the IMCC .
