We have been waiting now for a bit, longer than a nature break would normally take. In the forest 9000 feet up and no sign of Simon. There is sort of a pattern, Mick rides out front he is 100 % on navigation and can travel faster, Simon goes behind he has no Nav kit so will follow Mick . Nick takes the rear he has navigation (and can use it!) so picks up the route and Simon as need be. We had stopped to sort Simons bags which were about to fall off so on this occasion he got tailed back . It’s too long now and then he arrives…. went into the ditch he said, no harm done but the racks have taken another bash. They are not in good shape. Two corners later we see the police lights, the van a bent BMW with no rider.
He has gone to hospital. The trails can look easy but they are not, it’s deceptive. The larger stone roads are horrible rattling the bike everywhere, the smoother ones have a gravel skin of fine stuff, no grip; you slide depending on the fuel load. When full most care needs to be taken. Simon missed one bend completely and only a hole in the fence saved his bacon. Concentration. Colorado from the inside is spectacular, rugged, tree lined, rivers , the Rockies . Up and down we go over the Mullins and St. Pinto passes .. Pedals needed as the little motor sucks for air. The 14000 ft pass yet to come. More pedals. I have jets I think the girl will make it as is. Tyres still in some shape and looks like will make Moab (will have to). The one thing we notice is the change in the people as we have gone west …. hugely friendly from Carolina to Oklahoma … much less so in Colorado which is strange as it’s the tourist place … maybe that is why . Definitely would not want to run into problems on some parts, not because of the folks but they are remote. Utah next target 🎯
