In American terms Death Valley (!) is not too far from here … a little south. Never been there but can now understand the name. It’s roasting Hot again too hot, dangerous to ride between 1 and 4 pm at least. Taken the advice, parked up. We pulled in after 229 miles yesterday with what we thought was a relatively easy 120 mile run to Moab this morning…. early up and out Mick and Nick sailing on to the forest 🌳, then the wheels came off. Out front for once Nick missed one forest turn to run up a hard enduro track but in doing so missed the forest road closed sign .
Out here , they don’t skim the fire roads they cut them a foot deep with a stone burier ( Mick said that what it is ) , and we landed right in the middle of foot deep rock infested soft potato drills … 😡. A mile either way …. imagine with 220 kg bikes . We escaped intact after much footslogging, swearing and some nasty looks from the local road men.
Bikes in the mist when eventually exiting the forest, the vision in front is difficult to describe … red sandstone canyons far as the eye can see. This time we were glad to see the oasis below (it took another 2 hours to ride down), food, drink and shade. We have to stay here to maintain the bikes; the bike shop guy does not operate in the afternoon (too hot) only from 7 am to 1. Will be there at 7 tomorrow 😴
