There were Turkeys galore at the 2017 annual run, dozens of them in all shapes and sizes. Thankfully none were for the oven but perched atop a motorcycle (in varying shapes and sizes) chasing little yellow discs around West Clare.
When its Friday night, freezing, and out little convoy is huddled around a cup of hot coffee in Portumna you would wonder are we right in the head. No fun if it’s not hardship the Prof retorts (he is fine he has heated grips) as we jump aboard to continue towards FR Teds county full in the knowledge within 10 minutes we will be blocks of ice again. There are those who even have heated jackets, even so tonight is too cold for them to venture out. Lightweights. The Ice men (and two hardy bucs from Fermanagh) reach Kilfenora to find the car park full of Vans with more lightweights fully intent to arrive warm and cosy with the heater full on. Someone has got this all wrong or our group are lacking in a bit of grey matter …. Why would you take a van when you can freeze on a bike?
Such a journey does nothing to detract from what was another well laid out, well run and enjoyable event starting in the slightly warmer conditions of Saturday morning. A few sore heads and all. Diathi and Joughan had once again done their homework, a lot of preparation from paperwork to route planning to provide a superb route accessible to all standards and bikes. A new road book route was also included for those who preferred something different to the GPS. Not easy to make such a book accurately but it worked by all accounts.
There were roads, tracks, trails and a bit of bog thrown in for those who wanted to try their hand. The limestone base of the Burren gets no less slippery, but it adds a bit of adventure with such tracks shortening the route for those who took that option. There were some who did and possibly the same team(s) who collected all 26 route points within the allocated time. No winners or losers just a bit of fun. Great fun.
To Daithi and crew a big well done and thanks for an excellent event held in a great location (Vaughens). The freezing run was worth it. Maybe we should have hitched a lift back?
