“The date of this years Riders was changed after much thought and consultation with dmtc members and others who do the Riders, the date change was decided by the elected committee of our club.. plus the current Riders Rally committee of which I am a part.
The Rider’s Rally -24th to 26th June 2016 www.dmtc.ie Quite simply the numbers attending over last number of years are not backing up the August date – there may well be other reasons . The 2015 Sunday was a washout – camping was curtailed and the BBQ became an indoor affair. The age profile is also changing and many people were heading home on the Sunday. It has been discussed in previous years about changing the date as many people have family commitments and the Bank Holiday weekend does not suit. Moving to the June date means we are just ahead of school holidays. In addition to that finding accommodation has become increasingly difficult in August with regard to price and availability. If you were an hotel owner would you be ok to take a one night block booking on a bank holiday weekend – now multiply that by finding three individual nights around the country and include camping into the mix. Something had to be done and this is one move that is being tried. Already people who would not normally do the Riders have suggested they will this year because of the date change so it might not suit everyone but then a new generation might try it out and move it forward.
